wednesday reads and things
After I finished The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow, I idly looked for fanfiction. There are all of two fics: one is Una/Owen smut, and the other is not actually for The Everlasting but is a sort of fusion, Palamedes and Camilla from The Locked Tomb Series in a plot drawn from The Everlasting...
...and I really liked it! Camilla Everlasting by
And...that's about all. I'm currently eyeball-reading The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson, and listening to Heaven's River by Dennis E. Taylor (book 4 of the Bobiverse).
What I'm currently watching:
We noped out of Fallout S2 after two episodes, and are now about midway through 1923, one of Taylor Sheridan's numerous Yellowstone prequels. I had not been really inclined to watch it, but B roped me in with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who I must admit are excellent here; however, the narrative strand dealing with the Indian boarding school is the most compelling (and horrifying) to me. (Living in Indian country now - Southern Ute land, near a college that is free for tribal members, who make up about half the student population, which incidentally was originally on the site of an Indian boarding school - I'm much more aware of this terrible part of our country's past.)
What I'm still playing:
I think I'm getting close to the climax of the second act (of three) of Ghost of Tsushima.

Apricate = to bask in the sunshine
Timorous = scared, fearful, or simply shy
Feel free to interpret the prompt as you want. You don't have to use the word itself in your work.
Allowed are fics up to 500 words, small poems such as haiku or tanka, icons (100 x 100px), and graphics (maximum 500 x 500px).
All fandoms, genres, and ratings are welcome. Original works and real-person works are fine, too.
Please tag your work with all relevant tags.
This challenge runs until April 30, midnight in your timezone.

This and That
Fandom-dropping progress, April 15 report
Down to 939 fandoms total. (Only 26 currently have any tags to wrangle.)
I’m keeping up the pace of “shedding about 100 per month.” Still working on the second A-to-Z sweep, just finished with the P’s.
Also, still chipping away at recruiting “wranglers who aren’t over-the-limit” to pick up unwrangled Religion/Mythology/Folklore fandoms. I’m doing a little basic research on each one first. Someone with the right cultural/research background will always be better at spotting subtle inaccuracies, but for the fandoms that don’t get a wrangler like that, at least I can request fixes for anything really glaring.
Latest win: figuring out that this Ukranian “Folk Tale” fandom needs a rename, because all the fic is actually for the adorable 2024 cartoon Pravda & Kryvda. (11-minute pilot, free on Youtube.) Ukranian folklore-inspired with angel/demon vibes (I’m 0% surprised the artist has also done Good Omens fanart), extremely f/f shippy, has a fascinating “they were created around the same time but now there’s an overt age gap” dynamic…yeah, okay, I’m subscribing.
AMT updates: With the Madoka subtags approved, I went ahead and made the new Fake News tree request last week. (Basically the draft proposal I shared in February, with some slight tweaks.) Still no response to the behind-the-scenes question I mentioned in March…so yeah, I’m going forward on the premise of “if it’s that unimportant, it won’t be a roadblock.”
Reader Rabbit (1984) · Writer Rabbit (1986)
The game's menu offers nine options: Sorter, Labeler, Word Train, and six different Matchup Games. In Sorter you get a series of words, and you have to decide whether each one matches a given letter in either the first, second, or third position. If it matches, you move it over to the side, but if it doesn't you throw it in the garbage. (This obviously predates the 1990s eco-tainment craze, or else we'd be recycling.)

( More on Reader Rabbit )
Reader Rabbit was wildly popular and led to a slew of sequels and spinoffs. I had never heard of 1986's Writer Rabbit until
While Reader Rabbit offers a solid but fairly staid selection of spelling exercises, Writer Rabbit is far more wacky. After punching out from a week of back-breaking labor at the Word Factory, it's time to attend Writer Rabbit's Sentence Party and cut loose with a mix of games mashing up sentence diagramming and Mad Libs. In the Ice Cream Game, you are given a phrase and have to identify it as either WHO, WHAT, DID WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, or HOW.

You can play Reader Rabbit and Writer Rabbit on the Internet Archive, for the finest in lapine-themed edutainment. Did anyone else play a game from this series? There are a million of them!

Musical Interlude: Old Favorites from Altan and Tracy Chapman
"Green Grow the Rushes" (not to be confused with "Green Grow the Rushes O," a different Irish song!) is a song I heard at my cousin's house as a kid and remembered only pieces of and spent many years trying to find! I had figured out that it was Altan but it took a while to find which album the song was on.
Tracy Chapman is a classic of course. "For My Lover" is one of the first songs of hers I remember listening to (though it may not actually have been the first), on a friend's Walkman on the bus on a school trip.

What I read
Finished Never After, I can see that there are good things about it, but it was just not really what I was looking for at this particular time. It's historical novel, rather than romance.
Latest Literary Review.
I then finally got stuck in to Edward St Aubyn, Parallel Lines (2025), but although I did finish it, did not think it came up to Double Blind, found it hard to keep track of the various characters, and was a bit disappointed.
Started SJ Fleet 'The Secret Barrister', The Cut Throat Trial (2025), which is that ?tapestry-style novel of a trial where it gives you the viewpoints of the various parties involved, and even though I could see (or maybe because I could see?) it was not going to turn out as clearcut a case as it looked, could not get involved, gave up.
Also started and gave up, Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing (2023), because I was getting vibes of a kind of narrative I have been there and done that many times over the years and this was not bringing the over and above that would have kept me reading.
Decided that I wanted to read some more Arnold Bennett and found that I had Mr Prohack (1922) on the ereader and not sure I'd ever read it. Not by any means one of the top Bennetts but still quite acceptable.
On the go
Project Gutenberg have only just released Naomi Royde-Smith's The Tortoiseshell Cat (1925). I have been wanting to read something, anything, by Royde-Smith for ages, and this is showing very promising. Our protag starts out as teacher in a girls' school with rather more ambitions than those in which D Richardson's Miriam finds herself, but has just been fired.

Jesus
This is not sustainable, but it's not going to get better any time soon.
I could eat at work, but let's be clear, I don't much like the housekeeper's cooking, they rarely have in stock what I'd need to make my own food the way I like it (other than eggs), and also I have some weird food issues around... I don't really know. Eating other people's food? But not at a restaurant where it's okay? Maybe it's smelling the food? I honestly do not know, that's what makes these issues weird. (But even if I didn't, she boils the poor vegetables to death.)

Wednesday Reading Meme April
- Eleanor & Park was a good story of teenagers falling in love
- In God We Trust (All Other Pay Cash) - this is the book that A Christmas Story was based on. I found it incredibly disappointing and DNF'd it.
2. What are you currently reading?
- A Magic Steeped in Poison - this is the April read for
bookclub_dw. I'm enjoying it so far, but I need to make notes. I too wrapped up in the story! - Party Crasher by Sophie Kinsalla, who died recently. I enjoy her books and wanted somehting lighthearted.
3. What will you be reading next?
I have a few books to read in my physical pile, but my local independent bookstore is hosting a bookclub discussion in May, so I'll probably read that book. I don't remember the name at the moment.
🌙
I've been reading Haroun and the Study of Mischief by Lynn Strong and it's the perfect moontime read. It's comforting and hilarious and all the characters are a delight. It's set in a fantasy world that feels close to home. My South Asian self rarely encounters such a thing. I don't often want to escape to a world that feels close to home, but here I do. So that's a novel feeling!
I bleed so heavy that I need to use pads most of the time and change around 8 times a day. I prefer period panties on my light days, but on my heavy days it has to be pads because washing a pile of period panties is exhausting. Four days of my period are heavy, so that's a lot of pads I run through. I was unhappy about the prices of organic pads and the hazardousness of the inorganic ones, but I recently found organic bamboo pads that are 400 rupees, or $4, for a pack of 40 pads 320mm long! I'm using them now and they're really nice. Comfortable, handle my flow, don't make me sweat. And they're unbleached!
It seems that there's a factory churning them out cheap and supplying it to brands (white labelling) because when I search for organic bamboo pads, they all have the same wrapper but are being sold as different brands. There are some being sold as a generic lot with no box or brand, and with the same wrapper, like this lot. I just thought that was interesting, lol. I'm going to stick to the brand I bought because they come with additional individual disposal bags that you can reseal.
