I have almost finished the last round of candy. This was less of an interesting batch because I picked up a lot of hard candies. Some were fruity, fizzy, had shreds of coconut inside (that one was kind of interesting) but there were generally no big surprises. Oh, one was just straight up a cough drop lol. It's got "eucalyptus menthol" on the wrapper and is green with a cross and when I popped it into my mouth I was like, this is just a cough drop. I would eat cough drops like candy if I didn't have minor concerns that this might not be good for me so I'm not complaining.
Anyway this post is not really about the candy. Today was independent book store day, and because I was soo good about not buying books last year (this is a lie) I decided to treat myself and got a big ass pile today. There was a book store crawl in the city and my roommate and I hit up 10 of the 30 stops. The crowds were large, a good sign for humanity maybe. I picked up about 7 inches worth of books, which is how books should be counted when you are struggling to fit more into your room. Here's a picture of the haul, but for text's sake, I got:
Brust - Taltos. For some reason none of the shops had any other and it does seem to be next on the list so I guess I'm reading things in publication order.
Hammett - the Maltese Falcon. I've started reading this one. I know the misogyny is baked into the genre but after being saturated in modern queer fiction for so long when it first hit my brow furrowed. The main reason I got it was to see how close the plot hewed to a Jayvik Maltese Falcon AU lol.
Sartre - The Age of Reason. Definitely most likely of the bunch for me to never get to.
Wodehouse - Carry on, Jeeves. I've never read a Jeeves so figured why not.
Zelensky - A Message from Ukraine. This was done as part of a fundraiser, but it's a remainder, so I don't think the fund got any money from it. It's connected to https://u24.gov.ua/ so I will donate there too.
Murata - Life Ceremony. Last weekend a friend handed me his copy of The New Yorker with a feature on Murata, who I haven't heard of before. Then today was the first time I've been in a shop for new books in a very long time and a few of her books were front and center, so I guess she's having a moment.
Wormwood Journal. It's a journal of historical fantasy and weird fiction. I'm more into fantasy and this is more into weird fiction, but this issue seems to deal mostly with fairy lore.
Winspear - Maisie Dobbs. Picked up because it looked like a palate cleanser after the Maltese Falcon.
I haven't finished a single book this year, although I've started a handful, so maybe one of these will break the drought.
