I haven't had much time to play many NextFest games. I've got about an hour every night to chill and the rest is work. (FML) But I still am playing a little because if I don't I'm just going to burn out. So here's some quick reviews.

---
The only two gachas I'm spending time with atm are Honkai Star Rail and Nu:Carnival. The current HSR storyline is boring me to death. There's a hint of something interesting there, but I find myself putting the dialog on auto and getting distracted with something during this update. I know it's a meme and people argue about whether the game has "too much yapping" or its just that gamers can't read, but as a gamer who reads a fuck ton, I'm firmly in the "too much yapping" camp at this point. I'm kind of interested in Mydei's whole thing but it comes out in between minutes worth of ambiguity, repetition, and just not interesting stuff. Also the appearance of yet another tiny child girl person is another nail in the coffin of my interest. I still kind of like the combat and some of the side content and am just sort of chewing through the plot very slowly because I can't be assed to engage with it, so I'm not really at a point where I'm quitting, but I'm very meh on it all.

Nu:Carni also came out with an update, and since it's the anniversary we get some big changes, namely a "cabin" system. It took me a while to figure out how to use it, which is honestly a little janky, and I don't think I'm going to spend too much time with it. However, the thing I like about the game is the story. Contrary to HSR the event stories are the best part of this game. They're humorous, and dramatic, and take good advantage of the lovable personalities of all of the clan members. I love how much of the writing is the clan members interacting with each other instead of just focusing on Eiden too. He doesn't show up in this story for multiple chapters even! I always play right through all the available plot rooms when a new event comes out because they're engrossing, and I never get tired of the clan getting possessive and protective of Eiden.

Even though it's been a month, I'm just now trying to get in order the things I brought back from Japan. So here's part 2 of that, all the fannish stickers and paper I got.

My roommates wanted to see Godzilla and since I had seen a bunch of people saying it was very good, I thought fuck it, why not. I had never seen any Godzilla movie before. The old Japanese movies looked amusing but I had no interest in them, and the American movies looked bad. This movie was fine. It was good in a very, ah yes, Japanese drama, sort of way. Godzilla itself was cool, some of the action was neat, the human interest stuff was cheesy and predictable, but it was earnest enough. I'm very much not a fan of the sort of directing that goes into some of Japanese drama, where the actors chew the shit out of the scenery, and this movie had a whole lot of that. It's one of the reasons I don't spend that much time with Japanese live action even though it would be good practice for me. And I couldn't get too invested in the story because it was so paint by numbers. I found the sets and the costuming to be the most interesting part of the whole thing.

I'm not the audience for these movies.

The one thing I found endearing was how Godzilla was animated. We've come a long long way from the special effects of the first movie, but because the man in suit movement of Godzilla is so iconic, this Godzilla still had a weird, stiff gait and funny proportions. This amused me.

But I don't thing I'm seeing any more movies in the theater for a long time. We have a few nice cheap theaters nearby, they used to be 5 dollar second hand theaters before COVID fucked things up and now they're a little different but still cheap. But whenever my roommates want to go watch a movie they want to go to the fancy place a whole town over that costs 15 bucks and the scrooge in me just can't abide this so after swallowing the sticker shock twice in a short period of time it's back to library rentals and a friend's netflix for me..

got_quiet: Loki giving a thumbs up (Loki)

I just finished reading Midnight Riot a couple days ago. It's a brisk and humorous little police caper where our hero, a fresh newbie on the London police force, happens to tumble into the supernatural crimes unit (population 1, well, 2 now) after interviewing a ghost as a witness to a gruesome murder. The book is part chasing down the culprit in a series of spontaneous and brutal crimes, learning to negotiate fantasy politics between the spirits of the Thames, learning about magic, and feeling respectfully horny towards the women in his life. There's also a good deal of wry humor, particularly in the way Peter describes the world around him and the odd predicaments he finds himself in. I would say the good-natured tone of the book, and the fun narration carry the plot, which is fine and interesting, but maybe not robust enough to feel like a really good detective novel.

I finished watching the three part Overwatch shorts and am unimpressed. There wasn't anything there in terms of narrative oomph, and the lore introduced is just begging to be picked apart. Why was Liao only able to make one intelligence, and why'd it have to die to spread consciousness to all the omnics? It's just makes no sense out side of handwavy magic-tech convenience. The general lameness of the writing was to be expected, as it was on par with pretty much everything else that's come out for Overwatch, though I still feel compelled to keep half an eye on it. I still haven't read the Reaper short story to completion, nor the one for Baptiste though, cause I just feel sad about them. I read the Orisa book a while back and felt that a children's book like that was as sophisticated as the writers could get.

The one thing I'm following that had an update I did enjoy was Nu:Carnival lol. The last event was for summer, and had a nice long story plus included a rhythm game. The game is not particularly well optimized so I have ignore the music to get the timings right but I still enjoyed it. It's also sort of lucky that I don't pull for Edmond, Dante, or Kuya, so I got a big chunk of time to start stocking up contracts for the next event.
