Got Titanium Throne and have been enjoying it. The core gameplay loop has two phases. the first is a match three where you get resources and manipulate a playing field to be layed out the way you want it for the second phases, which is something of an auto battler. Using the resources in the first phase you schedule a series of spells or summons and then the scene plays out without your input as enemies spawn or units collect resources. This rundown doesn't do the game justice though, because the brilliance of it is in the presentation. The premise is you find yourself at faerie court, and want to go home, but according to the court you are their queen and need to lead them to victory in war. What's the war about? Who knows. There is a mind bending juxtaposition of the hyper modern (foodball and baseball references are everywhere, everyone looks like a yuppie from the 2000s) and the classical fantasy (the faerie court is just how I like it: changeable, absurd, and imbued with a confident logic that none the less makes very little sense.) The castle you're stuck in ups and walks around, moving itself from engagement to engagement. The writing is top notch, full of whimsy, mischief, and fourth-wall-breaking gags. As an example, I had played the demo a few months ago, just bought the game recently, and when I came back the game was like, "Oh cool, you bought the game, great! Well here you are in your old save. Would you like a refresher on how the game is played?" And I was like, "Sure, thanks," and the game went, "Ok, so just delete this save and start from the beginning. That'll be a better refreshing than anything!" And then it throws you into the boss fight that the demo had stopped right before.

This might sound malicious but the gameplay is simple on its face and the demo was not that long. There is still a lot of depth to actually playing the game, as the units you chose or the "job" you pick will significantly change what terrain benefits or hurts you, and there are a many sub objectives and a variety of challenges. I'm not very far in at all but there's often something brand new showing up in a level and a lot of fun banter to go with it.

And then there's the inter-gameloop segments. Much like the home bases in Hades, there's stuff to do in between runs that change with some frequency. A lot of times those elements come with their own very easy match three minigames which add a little interactability to what is otherwise a somewhat linear plot. I have so far tried and failed to get a single straight answer out of Puck, tried to help a cat get to the top of a shelf via a stacking puzzle (that you fuck up if you match three), gotten lost on a labyrinth, and chugged a Loving Baseball potion, which everyone was excited about because they didn't know what baseball was and wanted to find out what it was like loving something you had no exposure to. They also are very dismissive of idea that cars exist.

Looking at the recent patch notes, it looks like there is a lot of content that I haven't seen yet, so I'm excited.

With a puzzle type of game play, a lot of stuff to discover, and entertaining writing, I definitely recommend this game.

Since I am avoiding a deadline at the moment I spent all night making up a random list of 100 items of formative media modeled after [personal profile] queenlua 's list of 100 books. I started out with books, but hitting 100 titles that really had a notable impact on me was impossible, largely because my memory is not strong enough for me to recall enough of them and also because I read a lot of schlock that doesn't linger. So instead it's Books, Movies, TV, and Games (and 3 bands).

This list is here. Looking it over it's a whacky mix of stuff that grabbed me at an early age but never would have otherwise made a dent (most of the movies) or stuff that really changed my brain one way or another. There are a few books on there that suck ass but my reading them still resulted in a permanent change in brain chemistry, so they stand with the rest. I also tried to stick to a single instance within a group. So, not every Ghibli film, not every Blizzard game, etc., just representative or particularly notable titles.

If you decide to join me in wasting some time let me know how many you matched with and if there's stuff you have strong opinions about or find intriguing.

I'm sure when I wake up tomorrow I'm going to think, "Why is X not on the list?!"

ETA:

I did in fact realize there were two things that absolutely should have been on the list.

The first is Anne Fausto-Sterling's Myths of Gender, which had a massive effect on my understanding of society's understanding of gender. The other is Language in Thought and Action by Hayakawa, which first got me into linguistics and probably turned me into a total sophomoric ass sometimes re. semantics.

I managed to very quickly play a small handful of games during the recent Next Fest. I’m skipping the games that were either trash or just not notable. Here are a few that I thought were kind of ok, but nothing stood out this time.

TBH my mental has been in freefall since November and no guesses for why that is, so I'm mostly posting to force myself into something resembling activity.

got_quiet: image of Eiden from NuCarnival looking mischevious (ehehe)
I haven't had much time to play many NextFest games. I've got about an hour every night to chill and the rest is work. (FML) But I still am playing a little because if I don't I'm just going to burn out. So here's some quick reviews.

---
The only two gachas I'm spending time with atm are Honkai Star Rail and Nu:Carnival. The current HSR storyline is boring me to death. There's a hint of something interesting there, but I find myself putting the dialog on auto and getting distracted with something during this update. I know it's a meme and people argue about whether the game has "too much yapping" or its just that gamers can't read, but as a gamer who reads a fuck ton, I'm firmly in the "too much yapping" camp at this point. I'm kind of interested in Mydei's whole thing but it comes out in between minutes worth of ambiguity, repetition, and just not interesting stuff. Also the appearance of yet another tiny child girl person is another nail in the coffin of my interest. I still kind of like the combat and some of the side content and am just sort of chewing through the plot very slowly because I can't be assed to engage with it, so I'm not really at a point where I'm quitting, but I'm very meh on it all.

Nu:Carni also came out with an update, and since it's the anniversary we get some big changes, namely a "cabin" system. It took me a while to figure out how to use it, which is honestly a little janky, and I don't think I'm going to spend too much time with it. However, the thing I like about the game is the story. Contrary to HSR the event stories are the best part of this game. They're humorous, and dramatic, and take good advantage of the lovable personalities of all of the clan members. I love how much of the writing is the clan members interacting with each other instead of just focusing on Eiden too. He doesn't show up in this story for multiple chapters even! I always play right through all the available plot rooms when a new event comes out because they're engrossing, and I never get tired of the clan getting possessive and protective of Eiden.

I saw the new seasons of Castlevania a few weeks ago. I honestly don't remember a whole lot of the first season, but remembered the gist enough to catch up quickly, and enjoyed this season more all around. The animation felt better, especially the combat, Alucard being there always improves things, and there was not as much of the singing, which I hated in season 1. I think the night creatures plot was the weakest part of the whole thing. For the majority of their screen time they just stood around. But enjoyed Maria's arc and how bloodthirsty she became, and how real her anger was, Annette's spirit journey was extremely cool and her romance with Richter was sweet, and Drolta made for a great villain.

Olorox and Mizrak certainly look hot together, but their relationship didn't quite click for me. Theoretically their whole dynamic would be right up my alley, but for most of the show I think Mizrak's attitude towards Olorox was leaving me cold. Maybe he cared a lot for him, but there wasn't enough going on between them for their relationship to get to the point where I wanted it to either get messier or be fixed completely. Obviously where they left it has added the complications that I was hoping for, but it was a bit late in the game at that point and I though Richter and Annette were a more interesting couple. They're both young adults who have had to grow up very fast, but still hold on to a spark of innocence that make their feelings for each other sweet.

I haven't been playing that many games because IRL is hitting me pretty hard, but I have snuck a few in. My friends picked up Enshrouded and no-lifed it for a couple weeks. I couldn't really join them. All I had the time to do was dip in, pick up a bunch of hand-me-down equipment and follow around on a few quests. Maybe in the far future I'll have time to sit down and really explore, because it seems like it has developed into a robust open world survival game with some fun exploration aspects. The thing that  makes me hesitate to try a solo game is that it seems to have more involved crafting than I would prefer.

The other game we've been playing is Ravenswatch, It's a action RPG rougelike with a decent multiplayer support. A lot of people immediately compare it to Hades, and while it has some minor similarities in the sense that you are a top down, have about 4 abilities to upgrade and modify and go through three maps worth of major phases. But the game is slower, more punishing, has fewer (basically 0) out of round mechanics, and focuses a lot more on the footsies. Also rather than going into lots of small rooms you're given a large map and tasked with prioritizing points of interested within a certain time limit. It's a tough game and seems more reliant on crafting a proper build, but it's also a fun challenge with lots of variety in playstyle among the different characters (all derived from fairytales and myth) and smooth combat. I enjoy a good footsies challenge and the multiplayer reminds me just a little of the good old WoW days. Even though there are no roles per se you can prioritize a support build in a variety of ways and there are synergies.

Since I don't have as much time to play as my friends, who have all maxed out most of the characters, I'm just slowly working on learning Aladdin, who is broken in a multiplayer environment, as he makes resources rain down on everyone else. So while by the end of the game I am largely gimped build wise, feeding everyone else trivializes the content anyway. As I am someone with a giving nature it's fun to listen to my friend's expressions of awe and disbelief as they hit new personal records in crit damage lol.

Things IRL are miserable and the firehose is full of shit right now so here's a youtube channel that just talks about company cats and dogs in Japan. You don't really need to know any Japanese to know that what they're talking about is the cute pets. If I weren't a cheap traveler and Hakone weren't more of a resort town than a place I'd ever end up for business I'd definitely stay here.

Been trying to finish up Blood of Zeus season 2, but it's so slow! And, well, it's bad. It's super bad. I can't defend it in any way. But I'm watching it in Japanese and calling it study. I tried putting on the Japanese subtitles in addition to the dub, but ... it's a completely different translation!!!! So while I could technically do both the sub and the dub I can't actually read along without effort.

I completely forgot about IF comp this year. I usually play at least 5 games so I can judge, but I've been so busy this year the whole thing completely slipped my mind. So I was reminded only a couple days ago and tried to play some games really fast (but still carefully) to get my votes in.

The first game in my personal queue was Awakened Deeply. It s a space parser game where you're going around a space ship solving puzzles. It was extremely basic. You find one thing in a room and that thing solves the puzzle in another room, rinse and repeat. There were a couple of places where some vocabulary got me stuck, and for some reason I have a terrible relationship with the "leave" verb in parser games. I always try to "leave [noun]" which almost always throws an error, and never try just "leave" until I'm at my wits end, at which point I remember to try just "leave" and finally manage to exit whatever thing I've been put in. I hate that verb. There was also one puzzle that I simply didn't understand.  That was the last puzzle of the game too, and the only one that really required more than picking up a thing that had the answer on it. So I wasn't particularly impressed with this one.

The second game was just on the edge of right up my alley but also just too esoteric for me to really be able to grab onto it. It's called Verses. I don't know what the plot was even though I played it through, but it involves "analysis" which involves interacting with Romanian poetry and getting lost in translation, but also there's mutants and dystopia and lots of viscera and shit, and someone dies. It felt interesting but just a half step away from meaning anything for me. I think the fact that you change the language by clicking on it, including translating poetry from Romanian to English, which removes the original language, which makes it feel very hard to read the original closely. I'm not grading this one until I've played my five games, because it's so hard for me to place.

got_quiet: Unimpressed kuya with a ... bubble. (kuya)
I play Gay Harem on and off, which is a porn gacha game. As far as the "game" part is involved, there isn't one really. It's basically a click chore simulator. But it's amusing to me because of 1) the over the top porn, and 2) it pumps out a dozen new guys a month, and to keep up that pace it ... "borrows" from other intellectual property. Mario, Final Fantasy, DBZ, Dragon Age, they will steal from everything, but they try to get away with it (and so far have succeeded I guess) by calling their stuff parody and also changing everything just enough so that the source is obvious but the Gay Harem version is a bizzaro alternate. I logged in for the first time in a while yesterday and one of the current event features these guys. Meet. Dr. Scientia, Leopard, Seppo, and Flynn lol.

I also gave Deadlock a try. The hero shooter aspects seems fun, but I have always disliked MOBA and this game is significantly more MOBA than it is hero shooter. I'm going to give it a few more chances, but "lane phase" and "shopping to win" is not my idea of a fun game, so I'll probably pass on it.

Read Reborn by Seth Haddon over this weekend. It was alright. Big plus was it was adult fantasy. I think I liked Reforged better though. The story in this one was ok enough. It felt a little directionless in many parts, which seems to be a big pitfall for stories that involve exile or fugitives, but despite a lot of rushing back and forth I liked all the characters and there was still a decent sense of scale. Distances felt distant enough, communication across countries felt appropriately difficult. And I like the worldbuilding in this series. There are cultural clashes and interesting religious practices etc. Reborn does the same thing Reforged does where it dumps so much fantasy jargon at me in the first few chapters I don’t know if anything will ever make sense, but things settle down quickly enough and it’s all perfectly followable in the end.

In the time that I haven't been reading I've just been grinding LEZ, which was predicted. I used to play a ton of stepmania when I was younger, and had some tracks that I adored. They were all lost in one of my many computer moves in the following years, which is a shame because I can't remember what any of the tracks were called. But I'm very out of practice with this sort of thing, and haven't played any music in general many years, so my sense of timing really needs to be retrained. On top of that unlike stepmania LEZ doesn't give any visuals for off beat notes, so it's not as easy to eye the spacing in some points. The sort of music that people seem to like to use as tracks nowadays is also highly syncopated, so it's been a challenge, but playing just raw hit the button at the right time rhythm games does something good for my emotional state for some reason. I just like to grind them.

Playing LEZ did make me nostalgic for stepmania, so I went poking around to see if it was still available. It seems like it technically is. The last update was in 2023. But the forums are completely dead. The last community post was like 4 years ago. So likely most of the great tracks that I used to play are lost to the decay of the internet. That's a real shame.

One of my mutuals on HSR sent me a message for the first time since I started playing, and it was to gush about my Aventurine lol. He is a pretty boy, and also very stronk at E1S1. When his rerun comes around I may just try to get another Eidolon for him, because he's by far my strongest unit. I also got Gepard and Welt back to back just with raw standard tickets, which means I have all of the standard banner's men now! I still don't have Bronya or Himeko, and I don't know if I want to use my 300th free pick for them. On the one hand, that would probably be the meta play to get Bronya. On the other hand, men.

Jeeze oh man. The crazy season for work is basically over, though, it is not as over as it's usually over due to certain Life Choices. But right on the tail end of it all I managed to pick up COVID and kind of got knocked on my ass for a while, and it's taking me longer than I would like to not just get healthy again, which is kind of sorta done, but also to reset mentally and start clawing back the good habits that I was trying to cultivate before I spent more than a weak barely eating and sleeping all day long. My bedtime is fucked up again, my attention span is low again, my fridge is empty again, I'm just a mess!

So this blog post is sort of an attempt to reset and reassess a little bit. It's not really a half year mark thing, but regardless here are how things have been going.

I did pretty good about eating more vegetarian meals during the first few months of the year. So the last couple of months I've only had a few days that were fully vegetarian. I'll try to get back on the horse but the whole, constantly on the edge of malnutrition thing is a problem.

I have resisted a lot of books that I would have otherwise bought due to the book purchasing moratorium, but I haven't been perfect. I think maybe 5 or six books have snuck into the house even though they should not have lol.

My reading also has not been at a particularly high rate. I recently got through half of Steven Brust's Teckla, and I'm enjoying that book a lot. I think it's a bit of a brave premise. The first couple of books were about being a crime lord and an assassin, and this book is like, "you know, that's maybe not the most spiritually healthy thing to be." The book is not wrong about that lol, but I typically don't expect a fantasy paperback to be willing to interrogate itself like that. I'm curious to see how this one ends.

I also read Woodland Stranger by Jane Buehler. It was unfortunately not good. It wasn't terrible, but just in the mediocre Original Works M/M category. The prose was very stark. Some parts were ok that way, some were way too dry and full of telling. The characters felt kind of shallow as a result. And the plot was frustrating, because it kind of wanted to be an adventure fantasy that dealt with a couple difficult subjects, like war and loss of family and possibly even toxic army culture? But it also realllly wanted to be safe and comfy at the same time, and it was like reading through a moral gauze. I read the book as part of a review program, which is always a little awkward because I want to support authors and see them succeed, but also believe very strongly that reviews are for readers, not authors, so with this program I often find myself trying to be frankly critical without sounding too mean. Sometimes that feels like a hard thing to do.

The one thing I did manage to achieve while sick and laid up was get Chronos on farm in Hades II. I have seen the matrix, his patterns are nothing to me now, and/or I just managed to build my arcana deck up enough and have a better grasp of weapon loadouts to start the fight at a much better advantage lol.

My goal for the near future is to write a couple small things for [community profile] fandomgiftbasket. I thought I'd have more time to do this but COVID obliterated my energy for everything.

And after that I want to finally. FINALLLYYYYY finish all the BLM VNs. I'm so close goddamnit.

I've been so wrecked work wise I haven't had much time to do anything. I usually binge on games for next fest, but I was only about to try a few extremely short ones. None of them were particularly notable.

I'd caught up with the HSR story and wasn't playing much at all except to use down my energy. The last limited I pulled for was Aventurine, who I got his E1S1 for, and he has basically trivialized most basic content for me now after I had to build up and struggle on most of the plot bosses before his arrival. I'm not pulling for anything else until a new Husbando that I desire comes around, so I'll have lots of jade for Sunday (hahaha...) when he finally appears. The foxian that got teased I'll try to pick up too. I like character designs that are not so over the top. It might take me a bit to get through the new update. I'm less enthusiastic about it because all the Firefly marketing has turned me off her entirely.

I got Hades 2 a while back but have only had a couple nights to really have a go at it. The bosses feel a lot harder than the Hades 1 bosses. They've been fun, but Cronos is wrecking my shit. It took me about 30 runs to finally kill him. And a boss outright disappeared in a patch before I could kill it it seems. My only real complaint is that there feels like there are a lot more systems and mats to keep track of in Hades 2, which I don't like so much. The card table is an interesting idea but also I don't like stopping the fun part of the game to fiddle with it. The boss fights are awesome though, and I'm liking the loadout options.

I haven't been able to finish up any of the VNs or read anything. I haven't watched anything recently either. The weird work related bullshit got slightly more bullshit and parallel to that bullshit I basically picked up a second full-time job. I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking, but for the past month I have been running on fumes. This part of the year is always the most hectic for me, but this year it just feels like it's doubly so. I'm looking foward to the chance to relax for a weekend... maybe next month.

During the Snowflake Challenge I was thinking of linking to my old Anidb account, which is largely unused, but then I went and looked it up, and read the reviews that high school me had left on a few things, many, many years ago, and decided no, let's not show this to people.

Anyway, Snowflake Madness is over, so it's time to start making posts about Baldur's Gate 3. The below is going to be spoilerific, so here is the more spoiler free reaction first. The game is very good but almost too long, The choices and relationships are also excellent, especially for a mainstream RPG, but I am maybe a little spoiled by Visual Novels and still think that they do a better job with some of the elements of narrative.

I've been playing without too much save scumming. A couple times a sequence has felt a little unfair, or the consequences of certain choices did not seem properly clarified, but for the most part, I have rolled with the very many punches that have come my Tav's way, and it's worked out.

Here's my Tav.

And his guardian. I didn't realize I was making his hair quite that red. But they're a good looking pair anyway.

My Tav's a human fighter, career grave robber and small time enforcer operating on the outskirts of Balder's Gate. He's not an evil guy, per se, but I am playing him as someone with an extremely small "us" circle as opposed to the "them" that he doesn't mind fucking over. Once he likes someone he's willing to literally commit murder for them, but he won't go out of his way to be mean, but he's also not going to try super hard to help those in need either.

My faves have been Astarion, Gale, and Lae'zel, in no particular order. Astarion was the early bird, so to speak, so he got Tav's worm. This made Gale very sad and me sad by proxy so I'm fighting the urge to roll a Tav to romance Gale now.

As I promised myself, with the new year I'm finally playing Baldur's Gate! I'm trying to approach things with tempered expectations, because the hype for this game is too high for anything to really match, and even the best video game writing is still video game writing. I have Divinity Original Sin 2 still somewhat fresh in my mind, so I kind of knew what to expect, but the first thing I noticed was how much less I like the combat system in Baldur's Gate. I've never liked the DnD system, and it doesn't make much sense to me as a video game system, but it seems like since this is a DnD product it's got to try to interpret DnD rules. I miss the Divinity system already, but I'm sure I'll adapt.

The other thing I was a little surprised by is that character creation was a little limited in terms of facial options. I'm not the sort of person who spends much time customizing my character so it wasn't a huge deal, but I like to tweak things a bit and you couldn't really. I guess that guarantees that your dude is relatively decent looking regardless. I went with a human fighter. Very vanilla, I know, but I've enjoyed sword and board classes. Having physical strength and being able to defend my allies is my power fantasy.
Spoilerish Stuff )

My brother and I finished our run of Divinity! It was a lot of fun and particularly enjoyable to play as a duo. I played a Necro/Hydro Ifan with some sword and board skills, and my brother was a glass canon summoner/archer Lohse. While playing with a friend was a fun way to do it, there were some pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Discussing tactics in battle and speculating about quests or pondering decisions together was a lot of fun. It was also nice to share feelings of achievement when we hit a particularly nasty combat or tried to achieve a certain outcome and had to keep trying over and over again. And of course when someone did something stupid or crazy and it worked or absolutely didn't there was an audience.
  • The RP approach when you're in multiplayer is a lot different from solo play and it was fun to have your other party member be an actual person with certain of his own ambitions. We both got into our characters pretty well and enjoyed becoming invested in their own quests.
Cons:
  • My brother tends to play at a faster pace than me and I have a habit of wandering off into random places so while we were generally in sync sometimes one of us triggered something big while the other was nowhere nearby. There's a teleportation mechanic that helps prevent this from being a huge problem, though, playing split meant...
  • Sometimes one player gets lore and the other doesn't so the story feels like it would probably have been more coherent if it were played solo.
  • The difference in RP approach was also something of a con. We didn't interact with any of the NPC companions because we Lone Wolf duoed it, so I still know nothing about them, and even if they had been in the party it would have been harder to really interact with them properly when there is two of us.

We both agreed that it was a great game and we'll probably play again, this time separately. I want to try a rogue elf. Maybe I'll pick Sebille, though I might try a romance in which case I kind of want a male PC. It'd be also nice to play a game in which the scoundrel skills are at all in play. Neither I nor my brother took any of them and we couldn't sneak, steal or lickpick for to save our lives. But a second run is probably not going to happen any time soon. I don't replay games too often, and don't have too much time to do so either.

Below are a few plot/spoilery reactions to the game:

With Divinity officially in the books, I'm eyeing BG3, but I won't have time to really sit down and lose my life to that thing for a while yet, and I don't want to spend that much money either, so it'll still probably be after New Years that I can get to it. Meanwhile I'm trying cinch this BLM bundle VN play through. I'm almost done for real this time, and if I could get it done by the holidays then I can feel a little accomplished in my fannish life.

The demos in the most recent Steam Next event were largely superior to the last one in terms of base polish and playability. Only a couple of the games I tried were just complete ass.
