I have "finished" Baldur's Gate 3. That is, I got to an ending credits, at least.

My first run ended kind of like this:

Tav's End )

---

So now that my first playthrough is over I got some takeaways:

Stuff Tav did and did not do

So now, eventually, I'm going to roll a Durge and romance Gale. I'm not sure what sort of Durge I'm going to roll. I want something with high charisma so I can see all of the stuff I couldn't by being a tongue tied little murder machine, but I don't care too much for the CHA class options. I thought maybe a Male Drow Monk. Or if Cha a Male Drow Paladin. Are those allowed? Probably? I'm also not sure if I want to be good or evil. My Tav was, theoretically, good in that he worked for the good guys, even if he wasn't nice about it. So I didn't see any of the evil bits. I don't know how happy Gale would be about such a route though.

I'm curious as to what people thing are things that shouldn't be missed in the game, now that I've gone through once with a minimum of spoilers. Are there any interactions or scenes or things that were your favorite? Is there a companion interaction that you love to see? I'm going to go back to my plethora of Tav saves too and poke around some options. I don't know if I want to just hit an ending with a Thrall!Astarion and Human!Tav or go even further back and see if I can't get Astarion ascended, as he probably should have been in this run.

But for now I'm a little burnt out on BG3. The game is too damn big, so the save scumming and rerolling will have to wait for a while.

Now that I've finished that quest, I went to youtube to check out different possible outcomes.

Anyway everything else went relatively smoothly.
Tav's most recent questionable decisions )

During the Snowflake Challenge I was thinking of linking to my old Anidb account, which is largely unused, but then I went and looked it up, and read the reviews that high school me had left on a few things, many, many years ago, and decided no, let's not show this to people.

Anyway, Snowflake Madness is over, so it's time to start making posts about Baldur's Gate 3. The below is going to be spoilerific, so here is the more spoiler free reaction first. The game is very good but almost too long, The choices and relationships are also excellent, especially for a mainstream RPG, but I am maybe a little spoiled by Visual Novels and still think that they do a better job with some of the elements of narrative.

I've been playing without too much save scumming. A couple times a sequence has felt a little unfair, or the consequences of certain choices did not seem properly clarified, but for the most part, I have rolled with the very many punches that have come my Tav's way, and it's worked out.

Here's my Tav.

And his guardian. I didn't realize I was making his hair quite that red. But they're a good looking pair anyway.

My Tav's a human fighter, career grave robber and small time enforcer operating on the outskirts of Balder's Gate. He's not an evil guy, per se, but I am playing him as someone with an extremely small "us" circle as opposed to the "them" that he doesn't mind fucking over. Once he likes someone he's willing to literally commit murder for them, but he won't go out of his way to be mean, but he's also not going to try super hard to help those in need either.

My faves have been Astarion, Gale, and Lae'zel, in no particular order. Astarion was the early bird, so to speak, so he got Tav's worm. This made Gale very sad and me sad by proxy so I'm fighting the urge to roll a Tav to romance Gale now.

As I promised myself, with the new year I'm finally playing Baldur's Gate! I'm trying to approach things with tempered expectations, because the hype for this game is too high for anything to really match, and even the best video game writing is still video game writing. I have Divinity Original Sin 2 still somewhat fresh in my mind, so I kind of knew what to expect, but the first thing I noticed was how much less I like the combat system in Baldur's Gate. I've never liked the DnD system, and it doesn't make much sense to me as a video game system, but it seems like since this is a DnD product it's got to try to interpret DnD rules. I miss the Divinity system already, but I'm sure I'll adapt.

The other thing I was a little surprised by is that character creation was a little limited in terms of facial options. I'm not the sort of person who spends much time customizing my character so it wasn't a huge deal, but I like to tweak things a bit and you couldn't really. I guess that guarantees that your dude is relatively decent looking regardless. I went with a human fighter. Very vanilla, I know, but I've enjoyed sword and board classes. Having physical strength and being able to defend my allies is my power fantasy.
