Blood of Zeus
Nov. 7th, 2020 12:35 amBlood of Zeus premiered on Netflix only about a week ago and I'm just seeing it now. I didn't realize until a number of episodes in that it's probably the same animation company that did Castlevania, but the faces should have given it away in episode one. They're still stiff and a little samey, but they fit the Greek face and there are a few characters that break the mold well enough. Anyway, it's been a pretty good show. I am super into anything involving super powerful gods just going balls to the wall and this show provides that. It's also about as adult as Castlevania, with the same amount of gore, but less horror (obviously, I guess). And it leans pretty hard into the whole family drama aspect of Greek myth. Hera and her Seraphim (why did they call him that lol) are kinda the big bads in the show. They scheme and kill and all that, but they're also the most badass and honestly Zeus deserves all the shit Hera gives him and Seraphim kills a lot of innocent people but they give him just enough of a tragic back story that I'm still going to root for him. And his character design is my favorite, and I'm absolutely easy like that. Plus he starts getting pushed around by Hera and badass boys getting wrecked by the bigger badass is also my jam... so yes I have a fave.
(Who wouldn't want to fuck this?)
There are also griffins and they look amazing. Like, the plot is pretty basic fighting stuff and straight forward missions, which is a plus, and then there's a lot of cool worldbuilding and all the gods are cool, with god powers that are nicely realized, and there are griffins, and fighting, and the Titans designs are insanely cool with massive kaiju energy. What more can I ask for? The animation has some of the same framerate and stiffness issues that Castlevania did, but that's probably a budget issue, and if cutting some frames out means they can afford to make cool cartoons I'm willing to take that trade.
(This version of Hermes is weirdly hot, and is also a total daddy's boy)
There's also someone in that production company that is into M/M/F threesomes, because we get a glimpse of another one in this series. Unfortunately only a quick shot of three gods in bed but hey I'm still here for it. And I don't know how the English version sounds, but I find my problems with the audio when I was watching Castlevania doesn't happen when I watch in Japanese. Everyone actually enunciates. The plot also relies a lot less on plotting and arcane vocabulary so I can follow it around. The only weird thing is that it seemed the Japanese subs and Japanese dubs were done by different groups that weren't in contact with each other, so they don't match up. And I usually need the subs to catch a lot that my ear doesn't. So I'm missing out on some subtleties by doing it this way, but since the show is so straight forward this is actually a good one to study with.
(Apollo's a slut pass it on)
The show is only 8 episodes so it was easy to just binge it in one night and leave satisfied. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes actiony shounen. I know people whinge when a western company tries to call its product anime but I don't really care. They're clearly trying to project the sort of style they are going for, and even if it's not the same as a native show the world benefits from this sort of cross pollination.
