I managed to very quickly play a small handful of games during the recent Next Fest. I’m skipping the games that were either trash or just not notable. Here are a few that I thought were kind of ok, but nothing stood out this time.
TBH my mental has been in freefall since November and no guesses for why that is, so I'm mostly posting to force myself into something resembling activity.
Seekers of Eclipse - A deckbuilding city builder. You draw buildings that create resources and if you hit a threshold of resources you get power that you need to use to demolish the enemy. Meanwhile enemy buildings spawn that also cost power to get rid of or they'll destroy your shit. Was kind of fun. I don't really like deck builders all that much but I enjoyed the building placing aspects of it. The demo is just a small run through which didn't seem to be particularly high difficulty so hard to know if there is good balance in the game or anything like that.
Neo Junk City - A point and click adventure. It looks good and the controls are smooth. It doesn't feel like a glitchy awkward mess, which is very nice! The hook is that you are a busty cop bot who spends like 5 minutes active and interacting with your friendly caretaker before you are rebooted and wake up in an alley, gun in hand, and caretaker at your feet. For the adventure game crowd I think this one looks promising.
Beat Heart Beat - This game had better mechanics than most of the other "rhythm" tagged games in the fest. it's a rhythm platformer where the button you need to hit is relative to your position determines the effect that you'll have on the particular monster in the way. It felt responsive and was a fun run. The music however is was this off tune indy garage band stuff that I would not be able to stand for a full game. Kudos to them for not going with the usual techno but my ears cannot abide. If you like off key crooning and a simple runner with cartoonish art I'd suggest checking this out.
Fellowship - My friends roped me into trying this one by saying it's like running WoW dungeons. It is kind of a shitty wow dungeon runner. There's the classic tank/dps/heals trinity across 6 characters, and the dungeon I ran with them was just a single straight shot with clusters of trash and a boss at the end that had a little bit in the way of dangerzones. I played the mage and it seemed simple enough. The biggest annoyance was there was a lot of cooldown management and the optimal rotation seemed to be 6 buttons, so I spent most of my time watching the cooldown icons rather than paying any attention to the fight.
Neongarten - A citybuilder game where you stack little blocks that all have increasingly complex synergies and try to get the max points based on arrangement. If you don't hit a point threshold in the allotted time it's game over. There are too many things to keep in mind in this game. For people who like calculating multipliers this might be fun but I am not one of those people.
