Welp, it's 2021 and nothing has changed, as expected. My big resolution type thing I already started earlier in December, which is keeping track of all the time I spend after work in a more strict manner, to try to cajole myself into doing more than playing video games all night every night. Considering that Overwatch was still the thing I spent the most time in by orders of magnitude I don't know if it actually worked, but I do have a record of it now...

I ended up buying Children of Morta for Christmas from the gift card funds I got and have beaten it already. Part of this is because I played a lot of it but part of it is because it's actually a pretty short game at <20 hours.  It was suggested to me because I liked Hades so much, and there are some similarities in that it's a roguelite with an advancing plot, but that's kind of where the comparison ends. The game has some neat pixel art and worldbuilding, but the gameplay is not as satisfying and is more shallow. You get I think six or seven characters to play as, but those characters all have a single playstyle each, and even though there are some ability modifying buffs in runs they don't actually change how you approach any given challenge. The pace of the game is much slower. The correct course of action for a number of the characters is to stand your ground and hold the M1 button. Runs are also more based on advancing through levels over the course of the entire game rather than playing from beginning to end for each run. In other words once you beaten one region you don't go back. I had fun with it but now that I've reached the end (which was something of a let down as the boss fight is super easy) I really feel no compulsion to play it again. Whereas I'm close to 200 hours in Hades and the occasional run is still fun. There's a new game plus mode I may try out but generally it'd have to be dramatically different for me to care.

I mean, as long as you're getting other obligations done when needed, I think it's ok to play games otherwise. but I get if you wanna be doing some other stuff and you're trying to make that happen.

the only roguelike I've played is The Binding of Isaac and that was enough, after I got tired of it, to ensure I'd never touch a similar game again. though Darkest Dungeon does have a few roguelike elements, it's also got more to it, and is a game I love. of course you said roguelite, but clearly "rogue" is still there, so that doesn't change much. lol I just can't handle the loop those games go through. even if they break it up with something.
Children of Morta largely sounds like a bummer... at least you had fun with it.

I mean, if it was suggested because you like Hades a lot, then I think it's ok to compare a little bit. TBoI is... not sure I'd say punishing, but definitely not forgiving. ahaha. progress is very slow and the combat gets wild and sometimes overwhelming. I had fun with it, but I ended up so sick of it and really disliked most additions of Afterbirth+.

ah, I see. makes sense. I hope you can have success with that goal.
