Pets of Fandom: Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

An opportunity to talk about my cats? I'm definitely taking it. I have two: a tortie and a black cat, though the latter is more of a creature than a cat. 🤔

About my cats! )

Regarding fandom-related pets, the first one that came to mind was Steve, Rin Matsuoka's cat. Because Free! is really important to me. I remember seeing Take Your Marks in the theater when they were finally showing the movie in the USA. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone in that theater laughed their asses off once Rin muttered Steve's name with the most disdain the man could muster. It was great.

There are no words for how angry I am. I have already contacted my representative and both Senators offices. I also called the office of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to request that she lead the charge on the Bill of Impeachment.

To my Senators I wrote:

The President of the United States and his Secretary of Defense have committed the ultimate crime: Aggression against another country. This violates the U.N. Charter. It also violates U.S. Law as only Congress has the power to declare war -- FDR brought the request to congress after Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, for instance -- and only Congress can commit the funds necessary.

This is an impeachable offense. It is a violation of our Constitution, a betrayal of the Declaration of Independence, and a bone deep offense to United States values. I hope that a motion to impeach the President will be brought forward in the House within the first week of the New Year. We cannot let our allies, both in NATO and other regions, believe that we support this unilateral violation of international law.
Should the Articles of Impeachment pass, I hope that you will help expedite the trial in the Senate for both the President and the Secretary of Defense. This is such a serious violation of all Articles of War, that justice must be served swiftly and decisively.

Thank you for your service to the country in the Senate.

To my representative, who has a tendency to follow the President over all cliffs, it was mostly the same:

I expect you to vote in favor of the Bills of Impeachment for both the President and the Secretary of Defense.

Lack of support would show that you lack both honor and the Christian virtues you espouse.

I think we'll need a Venezuela tag.

Butterfly, by Kathryn Harvey

My New Year's resolution is to attempt to review every full-length published book that I read this year. We'll see how it goes. For my first full-length read of 2026, which is obviously highly symbolic, I have of course carefully selected a beautifully written novel with deep themes and social importance.

Just kidding! I randomly picked up a trashy beach read novel from the 80s, purchased at a thrift shop, while in the bathroom, got surprisingly engrossed in it, and took it out of the bathroom to read on the sofa. Which, to be fair, is probably symbolic of both the year to come and my reading habits in general.

Above an exclusive men's store on Rodeo Drive there is a private club called Butterfly, where women are free to act out their secret erotic fantasies.

I have a thing for "fancy sex club/brothel with highly-paid sex workers who like their jobs and fulfill your erotic fantasies." So I bought this book (50 cents, at a thrift shop) and actually read it even though it's in a genre I almost never read, which is the fat beach read about rich people's sex lives written in the 1980s.

Butterfly follows three women who patronize the club, Butterfly. It's named for the beautiful little butterfly charm bracelets women wear to the store to identify themselves to the staff as patrons of the club, so they can be whisked upstairs to have their sexual fantasies satisfied (just by men, alas), whether that means recreating a cowboy bar complete with sawdust on the floor to a bedroom where a sexy burglar breaks in to a dinner date where you argue about books, yes really. The women are all accomplished and successful, but have something missing or wrong in their lives: the surgeon can't have an orgasm, the pool designer deals with on the job sexism, and the lawyer is married to an emotionally abusive asshole. Their time at Butterfly leads, whether directly or indirectly, to positive changes in their lives.

Spoilers are almost certainly not what you're expecting. )

This novel, while dealing seriously with some serious topics, is also basically a fun beach read. I read it in winter with a space heater and hot cider, which also works. I'm not sure it converted me to the general genre of 80s beach reads, but I sincerely enjoyed it.

Content notes: Child sexual abuse, child sexual slavery (not at the Butterfly sex club, everyone's a consenting adult there), forced abortion, emotional abuse.

Anyway, that's enough sadness for what's supposed to be a fun challenge!!!

Pets in canon? Hmmmm I don't think they're overly common in the things I'm currently into right now. Admittedly, I had to look at other people's posts for this challenge to figure out what this could mean. Is it like, headcanon pets? Or actual pets in the canon work? Seems to be both!

Fandom pets )

Anyway, I just noticed I don't really write about pets as I don't have much experience taking care of one. And I mentioned dogs a lot in this post, but if I were to have a pet, I think I would get a cat. I'm not opposed to having a dog, but I know they need to be walked regularly, and I don't even average 1,000 steps in a month, myself. 💀

Theme: crack treated seriously, enemies to lovers, angst with a happy ending

Summary: In which Darth Maul applies for a loan, discovers a forgotten heirloom, experiments with space drugs, complains about his nemesis to a captive audience, and learns the value of bank fraud. Also love and friendship, but mostly bank fraud.

Reccer's Notes: A delightful story that starts with a cracky premise and takes it in an interesting direction. There’s a lovely exploration of Maul’s character and his relationship with Obi-Wan. It’s very funny with a heartwarming ending <3

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I'm going to talk about pets as portrayed in fiction I have consumed from childhood to present.

I think that pets can play an interesting part in fiction. Let's take a look.  I'm going to cover a few fictional pets I remember, from my childhood to more recent years. Obviously, this is a very short list; I'd be here forever otherwise.

I'm also going to try avoiding spoilers to the best of my ability.

Chance, Shadow and Sassy, Homeward Bound/The Incredible Journey: Two dogs and a cat. From what I remember, Chance is silly yet skittish, Shadow is wise, and Sassy is... in the name. But she's never mean, IIRC, and has a lot of empathy towards a lost little girl (likely reminding her of her own human).

(I rewatched the ending of Homeward Bound for this part, and now I'm sobbing. The things I do for you people.)

Miss Kitty Fantastico, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Tara's cat. I mostly remember that she dies offscreen, and her death is noted as accidentally  being killed by a crossbow. Which is actually pretty brutal. I don't love when cats dying is treated as a minor inconvenience. (And it's always cats.)

Buttercup, The Hunger Games: Prim's cat, who Katniss hates and frequently mistreats, especially after a certain spoilery event. However, after a very long time, she does take slightly better care of Buttercup.

Awful through Buttercup is treated, I feel it's meant to show how hardened Katniss is. Also, as a hunter, I think all animals are food to her - she would never eat Buttercup, that would devastate Prim, but she doesn't see Buttercup as family, either.

Little Sebastian, Parks and Recreation: A pony mini horse. We actually only meet his handlers in a very short scene, but he's absolutely adored by most of Pawnee's residents. Save for Ben Wyatt. Even Ron and April get tickled over him. Ron and April.

(Oh God, guess what song's in my head now?)

A Fuckton of Cats, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Technically, no cats are ever purchased. But Rebecca briefly considers it in this song.

Points the song brings up include that cats sleep most of the time, which is true. However, they also claim they're not that friendly, and I have to disagree. Cats can be very friendly; they're just not friendly on command. That's what people don't like.

Song's hella catchy, though!

Louie, This Is Us: I can already feel the anger rising. Louie is initially beloved, but his main human, Kate, blames him for Jack's death. (That's not a spoiler, we learn that Jack's gone pretty early on in the show, although not how.) That actually really upset me on several levels, though it sadly makes sense. Still, I wish Rebecca had been in the headspace to find a temporary home for Louie, at least, while Kate worked through her feelings. But it's a drama, so. (And in Rebecca's defense, she was reeling from losing her husband. But still.

Karl, Our Flag Means Death: Karl is mostly Buttons's pet, but the rest of the crew respects him, more or less. His death is the last straw for Stede.

Nellie, Heartstopper: Nellie is Nick's dog, and absolutely a member of the family. Charlie takes to her quickly, too. Nellie is very much family.

Artie, Fisk: Helen's dog. He doesn't do much, but he's sweet. When he appears to have been taken, Helen is devastated, and works through her grief by relating it to the loss of a human.

So, there you go. Most cat portrayals I can recall are either negative, or potentially negative (with redemption). I think Sassy is the most positive. Dogs are portrayed with much more positivity, although how much the characters consider them family varies. Pet birds and horses are also beloved and seen as important, often family.

Something to note as well is the transition from pets in children's stories being used to help us connect with humanity, and pets existing as pets in stories for adults.

PUNKS△TRIANGLE by Yuho Okita
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When a prestigious competition promises to make that dream come true, Chiaki is fired up to win. But his hopes are dashed when he’s paired with the clumsy and unfashionable Enaga for the project. One fateful night, after a run-in with some delinquents, Chiaki is unexpectedly saved by his idol Ai. Even more shocking, Ai seductively offers to teach him how to have fun at night…

Caught between the alluring, mysterious model he worships and a clumsy, rough-around-the-edges classmate who can’t seem to stay out of trouble (but may be hiding a surprising secret), Chiaki faces a heart-pounding, pure boy’s love dilemma that will turn his world upside down!

[personal profile] whimsyful

I completed 61 books in 2025. Overall I found this a weaker reading year for me—there were plenty of books that I liked or thought were fine but very few which I absolutely and unreservedly loved, and I experienced a major slump in the last quarter of the year where the only thing I could handle reading were either short novellas or long translated cnovels. I also did more re-reading this year than usual, including a partial re-read of the Vorkosigan Saga.

Top/Notable Reads of the Year

And All the Stars, by Andrea K Host
Reviewed here. Really top tier YA scifi, with a brilliant twist.

I Am Not Jessica Chen, by Ann Liang
Liang’s debut If You Could See the Sun (reviewed here) remains my favorite of her works, but this I think is her most personal and relatable. This tale of a young artist who desperately wishes to be like her perfect Harvard-bound cousin Jessica, only to wake up one day in Jessica’s body is not for everyone, but the depiction of the high-stress academic pressure cooker environment and how it affected the students in that environment was so spot-on it have me flash-backs.

The Red and The Black, by Stendhal (trans. Raymond N. MacKenzie)
I first read The Red and the Black as a teenager and have revisited it a few times since, but I think this English translation by MacKenzie is my favorite that I’ve read—it really captures the immediacy and vibrancy of Stendhal’s writing, and how vividly and intensely alive his characters feel (though this does mean that his characters can be very polarizing; you either find them unbearably relatable or just plain unbearable) . Reading this ten plus years after the last time was a very interesting experience, because whereas I found the protagonist Julien distressingly relatable as a teenager, this time my overwhelming reaction was “omg what a failboat drama queen, why is he like this”.

Goodbye, My Princess by Fei Wo Si Cun (trans. Tianshu)
Reviewed here. A perfect tragic romance, and deconstruction of the “cold monstrous man softened by love for a good woman” trope.

The Appeal, by Janice Hallett
Reviewed here. A really fun and well done modern epistolary murder mystery.

How Dare You?!/Cheng He Ti Tong by Qi Ying Jun
Picked this up after reading [personal profile] skygiants ’s review and seeing news of the upcoming cdrama adaptation, and I loved it! Really fun double transmigration cnovel that both goes really meta with the genre commentary, and manages to be serious and heartfelt where it counts.

All Consuming by Ruby Tandoh
A sociological overview of food trends and how social, economic, and technological forces shaped everything from cookbooks to viral food influencers to bubble tea. Very UK-centric, but Tandoh’s wry humor made reading this a delight.

The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (trans. Faelicy & Lily)
Reviewed here.

Inventing the Renaissance by Ada Palmer
Still in the middle of this right now, but I really like the thoughtful way Palmer structured the book to support her thesis, and how she repeatedly points out the default assumptions underlying common views of the Renaissance. I do find her style a little overly casual in a tumblr-esque way sometimes, but her content and structure and overall message more than makes up for it.

My main reading goals for 2026 are: 1) to make more of a dent on my physical TBR (I have a bad habit of ordering older/out of print books that sound interesting online and then not getting around to reading them because I’ve been distracted by something newer and shinier once they arrive) and 2) read more in Mandarin, as language practice.

Working at sea, I can't have any pets and that is the saddest thing, woe me. However, in delightful news, my dad has turned into a complete dog dad. He's wheeling them around in a stroller when they go to the mall!

Here's their official 2025 Christmas pic!
two small dogs with their tongues out, wearing scarves and santa hats.

And then my brother has two big floofs, but I could only find a picture of one. This is Luke (Leia is missing in action):
an orange cat is laying on the table in front of a Christmas tree and next to a holiday themed metal popcorn bucket.

+ My new memory foam pillow felt way too hard and high when I went to bed last night, but this morning I woke up to a soft, fluffy cloud. I may just have to wedge it under my back for a couple of minutes to warm it up in the evening (my bedroom is an icebox and I like it that way).

+ Did my Mystery Box challenge for [community profile] retro_icontest, the color being orange, and obviously that means Scully and her royal mantle of hair!
