Astarion...
Feb. 20th, 2024 06:47 pmMy Tav is something of a reluctant leader. He's mostly given his companions their heads and I've basically been playing as if they all keep rolling successful persuasion rolls against him. Astarion in particular he just wants to be happy, and since Tav is naturally inclined towards violence as a means of problem solving, he didn't push back all that much when Astarion said he wanted to take the ritual for himself. Tav isn't fully evil, he's just practical and without a strong moral compass, so he was less concerned about the moral toll of the ritual and more concerned that Astarion was supported, regardless of his decision. Because of that, I assumed going into the Cazador fight that Astarion was definitely going to ascend. Astarion certainly kept going on and on about how he was going to do it.
So we get to the basement. Astarion has his run-in with an early victim and and then it was off to get owned by Cazador like 6 times before I finally was able to bring him down. (I knew that Halsin knew sunlight but I COULD NOT find it in his spellbook for the life of me because it's BLUE. WHY?!) Astarion appropriately gets the killing blow on Cazador, we tear him out of his coffin, and then I'm like ok, ascension time, probably. Tav stands back and gives his boyfriend his space, and then then Astarion just murders the absolute fuck out of Cazador in hands down the most emotional scene of the game so far. I just wanted to scoop that boy up and pound into a fine dust anyone who so much as looked as him wrong from then on.
My Tav is caught a little flat footed. He figured once Astarion was so powerful nothing could threaten him he would become a squid man and the two of them could be weird monsters together, but now he's not so sure he's going to go through with his side of the power seeking. IDK if he'll be able to seek Astarion's opinion on the matter before the choice comes up but I hope so.
From a meta perspective I think the fight glitched and that's why it seemed that Astarion maybe made the choice independently. After I got Cazador to retreat to his coffin I couldn't escape combat. all the mobs were dead except for the Thralls, but every time I tried to open the coffin Astarion was like NOT THE TIME. I tried standing on all the power spots and that didn't work. I tried standing in the middle of the stage and that did nothing, so I had to kill a thrall, which immediately ended the combat and let me drag Cazador out of the coffin. I don' t know how the fight is "supposed" to go so I don't know if this was what prevented Astarion's ascension, but from an RP perspective, I'm just ignoring it as it didn't seem I had any choice in the matter.
I think I may have confused the game on the state of the Gur too. The quest log tells me they are all dead, which is true, but also that they will come to help me when I fight the brain, which I'm a little skeptical of considering how our past two encounters went (with them alllll dead.) So I guess we'll see.
And in Gale news his excited glee when I told him I totally trusted him with divinity again tested my resolve to hold off on rolling a Galemancer until finishing this playthrough.
Now that I've finished that quest, I went to youtube to check out different possible outcomes.
It appears that you can run into the other spawn while chasing down Cazador. I don't know why but I only saw the ones in the bridge inn, so I don't think I had the chance of getting this scene, where the spawn attack you and kidnap Astarion.
But the reason I'm sharing this isn't cause of the scene itself but because of a wonderful moment of spontaneous fandom. The video captured the Steam screenshot sound of the person recording the vid, and the comments are full of people gleefully cackling in commiseration about spamming screenshots every time Astarion is tied up and half naked lol. As one commenter put it, same, bestie, same.
