got_quiet: Eiden from NuCarnival looking sad (sadeito)

I've been ill these last couple of weeks in that sort of way where I'm miserable and can't get anything done but sure all hell am not going to bother going to the doctor. There was never any follow up with that online checkup by the way. I was waiting for someone to call so I could get my flu shots, since that was part of the survey, and nope. So I gave up on them and got a vaccination elsewhere today.

A consequence of my feeling terrible was my brain short circuited and things got so silly that I ended up having to go back into the grocery store three times in a row because I couldn't remember this or that thing, including groceries that I had left at the cashier's. And then I forgot to put the lunch meat away when I got home and it didn't occur to me until the next day that this had happened, and sure enough it was sitting in a bag that morning, so I had to go buy new lunch meat because I was already feeling like crap and didn't want to risk further deterioration of my gut health. I've been feeling better now but the last few weeks have been a bit of a wild ride.

A little bit ago I read When Among Crows by Veronica Roth. My immediate first reaction at the end was, "That's it?" It's a novella, and it's hard to tell you're approaching the end when you're reading on your phone. There was something like 5 scenes total in the main timeline plus a bunch of flashbacks. The author is pretty good at painting the picture and setting the scene, and the whole book evokes an atmosphere of a magical Chicago hiding in the midnight hours.  The three main characters have decent hooks. You have two monsters and a monster hunter coming together on a little quest, and there is a lot of on the nose themes about inheritance of roles, prejudice, rejecting family and found family, etc.   But I wasn't really able to buy into the characters' motivations or decision making enough to get lost in the story.  I could see the machinery in this one. I feel like a book this short (I read it in under an hour) should either have a premise that raises some interesting questions, or be a really strong character study. The premise was a very standard urban fantasy. The execution of that was good and I liked how it drew from Polish folklore specifically, but it sort of lacked the what-if that I enjoy from shorter genre fare. And while the characters are intriguing, they feel a little flat. I did enjoy the fact that Niko joined the gang because he thought Dymitr was cute and for no other apparent reason, though. Man betrayed his whole family for a pretty face he met a half hour ago.

By the end of the book I felt like there were more loose ends than conclusions. I wish there had been more. I definitely would have kept reading if their had been.

I also started watching Suits while sick, because watching TV was my maximum comfortable amount of activity. I just couldn't do anything, including playing any IF games because I couldn't use my brain properly. I'm on Season 2 Episode 6 and still haven't decided if I like it. There's stuff I hate and there's stuff that hits the id pretty strong and it all evens out to being decent fun that I'd hesitate to recommend.

On the one hand there are some negatives:

  • The plot sometimes feels too stupid for me to endure. I don't know anything about law, really, but sometimes the way the cases go it's hard to buy into the fantasy that this is a top law firm.

  • Some of the banter is dated and bad. I particularly hate the movie references. The can opener thing also made me thing I was back in the spork era.

  • It's live action, which lowers my tolerance for everything.

  • The protags are toxic asshole bullies for the most part.

  • The HET. It's so HET. OMG the HET.

But there are definitely positives:

  • The protags are toxic asshole bullies for the most part, but the narrative tends to punish them for it and generally is like: these guys are a mess.

  • The show is absurd enough that I feel it's kind crossed a line into a lot of fun?

  • Louis. He's hand's down my favorite and I honestly don't know why everyone hates him so much when they're all worse. I love Louis and am rooting for him now.

  • There's a certain nostalgia in finding slash shipping fodder in a show that is aggressively disinterested in anything but women and men fucking each other constantly.

Honestly, if it weren't for the het I would definitely be on the side of enjoying the show but every time the characters start fucking I think to myself, do I really want tow watch this?  So far the answer is yes, but as the season goes on the Harvey/Mike stuff is getting less interesting, and I kind of want to see Harvey forced to suck Louis' toes.

Also sort of kinda started playing this idle game on youtube of all places. Most of the playables suck, but there's this little game that's sort of similar to Neko Atsume. You can be a crazy cat dad with a husband and just fill your house with cats and do some bad interior decoration, and since you get your currency by just checking in once in a while I log in once at night, clip my cats nails, make my husband some lunch and that's it. It's called adorable home.

The bedroom scene in Adorable Home. Sometimes you're sleeping with your husband and one of your dozen cats is up to no good.

Yeah I think it wrapped up the plot within the novella fine, but it's so perfectly poised at the end to lead into more... Me psychically send Roth messages until she wakes up one day and feels compelled to write a sequel.
