Saw Project Hail Mary with my housemates. We all enjoyed it a lot and I've been hovering up all the fan art on tumbler for it. But possibly weirdly one of my takeaways as I was watching was "Damn I'm depressed as fuck." It's one of the reasons I haven't posted much on here, even though life has been puttering on and there have been things to post about. I'm suffering from some terminal doomerism at the moment, so as much as I loved PHM the optimism was like sunshine hitting Gollum. Lots of spiritual hissing and spitting was going on as I was exposed to the joy on the screen. It kind of sucks when your own mentality reacts to a movie about saving the world with the thought, "yeah couldn't be us though we're all going to burn to death."

Anyway Project Hail Mary was a fun movie and kept the schlock to a very reasonable minimum and I am always a big fan of "Space human in over his head with enough of a combo of smart and fumbling to be both useful and friend shaped." I haven't read the book or seen/read any other of Weir's works. I don't know that I'll go out of my way to change that, but I might end up checking out the Martian now if I find myself with a few hours to kill. 

The movie is relatively new so I'm trying not to hit too many spoilers, but if anyone wants to chat me up in the comments I'm happy to go full spoiler mode. 

And I have a bunch of posts half written about other crap so this is me trying to get back into the habit, sorta.

I read the book, and enjoyed it for the hope and friendship of it!! It makes me really happy to see opinions around the movie seem to be good overall.

The friendship was so good. I think any ending but what we got I would have been agitated over separation. That's a bonded pair now.

i'm only somewhat intrigued by this movie; it was a bit of a turnoff that the author of the book did some livestreams with a right-wing-coded nuthouse tho... hopefully the movie itself is lightyears away from that kinda crap lolll

The BS the author got up to with the alt-right stuff is why I'm not in any hurry to chase down his other stuff. But the movie itself doesn't have much to say about the realities of our politics at all really. It imagines a world capable of a certain amount of international cooperation and makes sure that the threat is completely agnostic in terms of fault because it comes from outer space. The last detail is a critique I was aware of before I watched and it is part of why as I watched I was like "I'm enjoying myself but also can't entirely give myself over to this escapism."

Insomuch as everything is political, the clearest politics in the movie is its deliberate avoidance of all politics. At least it does pass the very low bar of not being a complete WASP nest.

From the reviews it seems like Project Hail Mary has similar vibes, so you'd probably enjoy it. I really liked Ryan Gosling's performance, but he's one of my favorite actors.
