Snowflake Challenge Avalanche Again

Things have been so exceedingly busy at home that I still haven't made a nice little year in review post. I think the dust is starting to settle so maybe I'll get a chance to do that. I'm also constantly behind on the Snowflake Challenge.
Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.
Well I suppose the biggest thing is I remain eternally grateful to all the artists, authors, graphic designers, video editors, meta generators, memers, and so on, who give away their creative output for free purely for love of a story. They give me weeks worth of enrichment a year in total hours every year.
The other thing that has really improved my life is discord. Mostly because it keeps me connected with my brother and friends. We live far away from each other and only see each other in person maybe 2 times a year. We're also not inclined to just call each other up to chat, so before discord my brother and I barely spoke even though we were close as kids. When discord came he invited me to a server with a bunch of friends and every since then we're on voice chat almost every night, mostly gaming but also talking about personal stuff, and I'm closer than I've ever been to him thanks to that. It helps that we are united in our enjoyment of games too, so there's always something fun for us to do.

(MASSIVE ARCANE SPOILER BTW)
Jayvik was already a (great) ship before S2. It was also already gaining steam after Jayce got messy and did some mad science in the name of love, and Viktor proved himself equally obsessed. But their final scene together is so fucking beautiful that I think it changed the brain chemistry of hundreds of thousands of people lol. The animation quality, the orchestral soundtrack, the color choice. It was so good that every artist in the fandom simultaneously went insane and just redrew the final moment because it was perfect. I rewatch it and am suddenly just as nuts as I was the very first time.

First I'm gonna link to the a past promo, for Long Gone Days, cause I still want people to play that game super bad.
A book I'd want to promo is the Whyborne and Griffin series. It's a M/M horror series where the main pairing is Whyborne, a tall, lanky scholar of ancient philology who also is the son of a robber baron, much to his unhappiness, and Griffin, an ex-Pinkerton turned private eye with a number of personal secrets. The two come together to solve a disappearance, run into some cosmic horror, stop an apocalypse, and then just keep getting into trouble.
There's funky monsters lovingly described! There's two men who sit on the periphery of society for a variety of reasons finding each other and becoming each other's missing piece. There's adventure and messy family dynamics! There's human beings that prove to be more monstrous than the monsters! There's saying fuck you to social convention, wearing pants and bagging a handsome gentleman that sometimes needs a little rescuing. There's some very enthusiastic and explicit gay sex. There is mental, physical, and emotional whump but infantalization is dodged!
Each book in the series has a central mystery, usually a very terrible Lovecraftian horror, but as the series goes the relationship between Whyborne, Griffin, Iskander, and Christine also evolves so that by the finale they are all ride or die for each other. But they are also not without their conflicts, personality flaws, and insecurities. On top of that the supporting cast of extended family and associates are all lively and interesting in their own right, and the town of Widdershins is a character all its own. There are characters you love to hate, and characters who learn to be less of a complete piece of shit, and characters that disappoint in just how much of a complete piece of shit they are. And throughout it all is the central pairing, working through it all together, walking hand in hand through the end of the world over and over again because they love each other.
I really enjoyed this series and found that for the most part things didn't drag because there was good character development throughout the whole arc. There is a small but enthusiastic fandom for the books, and we are always looking to convert more! The series does hit some darker themes, it's based on Lovecraft after all, so if anyone needs content notes I'm happy to elaborate on any details. There are only 103 works on Ao3 so imo this is a great series to pick up for Yuletide (I say as someone who doesn't do Yuletide =x).

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive.
- Time, as evidenced by this hastily put together post.
- Recs for Jayvik fic. It's been a long time since I couldn't just read every single fic coming out when in the fixation phase! I'm particularly interested in fic that people think are underrated aka don't have many kudos or comments.
- Vegetarian recipes. I got some great ones last year that are now a part of my usual rotation.

Date: 2025-01-18 01:40 am (UTC)The books I always mix up are Swordspoint and Point of Swords, one of which I enjoyed and the other I didn't not, but which was which I couldn't tell you.

Date: 2025-01-18 02:31 am (UTC)I've read Swordspoint, I think, or one of the books in that series.

Date: 2025-01-22 11:35 pm (UTC)The Jayvik tag just hit 10k fics on AO3 apparently, it's wild how much momentum the ship picked up since season 2! I've not been able to read as much fic as I want either haha but I did start a rec list that currently has...3 fics on it lol but at least that's a start??
A New Knife (this was the first thing I read after s2, it's set post-s2 and is definitely one of the more popular fics haha but the ending did something to my brain I think.)
The Face That Launched A Thousand Ads (I found this while trawling for bottom Jayce fics jshdksdf but it was very funny and features Jayce doing modeling/advertising for Renata Glasc lmao)
the ghost and the machine (A beautiful universe-hopping post-s2 fic!! This one is definitely underrated compared to the big fics haha.)
(I also wrote a Jayvik fic and it's really stupid sjdfhjsdhf so don't feel obligated to read it. But if you like stupid stuff then 👍)
I really need to check out Whyborne and Griffin at some point because it always seems to be rec'd as similar-ish to KJ Charles's Charm of Magpies books.

And yeah I don't think anyone could have expected this explosion. I was hoping there would be a small revival but this is nuts. 10k fic and a large portion of it following S2. I also could never have guessed bottom Jayce would get so much love too. I'm almost always on the opposite side of the top/bottom preferences so I've been eating good lately.

Date: 2025-01-23 05:43 am (UTC)There's literally been like idk 6k fics, maybe more??, created for them in two months or something, it's basically impossible to keep up with it all lmao. And I know, same here. I like them either way but I'm glad so many people agree Jayce is Viktor's bitch whether he's topping or bottoming sjdhfksjfs
